Moran Summary

Moran is a small town located in Allen County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Allen County.

History

Moran was founded in 1872 by the Kansas Pacific Railway. The town was named after the railroad's president, William Moran. The first post office in Moran was established in 1873.

Geography

Moran is located at 37°45'45" North, 95°14'45" West (37.7625, -95.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Moran's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill. There are also several small businesses in town, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 221 households, and 145 families residing in the town. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 246 housing units at an average density of 407.5 per square mile (157.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 221 households, out of which 28.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
