Maize Summary

Maize, Kansas is a small city located in Sedgwick County, Kansas. It is situated in the south-central part of the state, approximately 10 miles northwest of Wichita. The city was founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1903. As of the 2010 census, the population of Maize was 4,323.

Geography

Maize is located at 37°41'25" North, 97°25'45" West (37.690278, -97.429167). It is situated in the Arkansas River Valley, at an elevation of 1,250 feet (381 m). The city covers an area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of which is land.

Climate

Maize has a humid subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. The average annual temperature is 61°F (16°C), and the average annual precipitation is 33.3 inches (845 mm).

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 4,323 people, 1,541 households, and 1,093 families residing in Maize. The population density was 1,026.2 people per square mile (396.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.

Economy

Maize is a small, rural community with a primarily agricultural economy. The city is home to several large farms, as well as several small businesses. The largest employers in the city are the Maize School District, the Maize USD 266, and the Maize Public Library.
