Macksville Summary

Macksville is a small town located in Stafford County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Smoky Hill River, and is the county seat of Stafford County.

History

Macksville was founded in 1887 by William Mack, a former Union soldier who had moved to the area from Ohio. Mack named the town after himself, and it was incorporated in 1891. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for the cattle industry. In the early 1900s, the town was home to several large cattle ranches, and it was a major shipping point for cattle.
In the 1920s, the town began to decline as the cattle industry moved away. The Great Depression further hurt the town, and by the 1940s, the population had dropped to just over 200.
In the 1950s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The construction of a new bridge over the Smoky Hill River in 1954 brought new life to the town, and the population began to grow again. The town also began to attract new businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a lumber yard.

Macksville is located at 37°51'17" North, 98°45'45" West (37.854722, -98.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Macksville is a small, rural town with a population of just over 500 people. The town is primarily a farming community, and the main crops grown in the area are wheat, corn, and sorghum. The town also has a few small businesses, including a feed mill, a grain elevator, and a lumber yard.
