Kinsley Summary

Kinsley is a small city located in Edwards County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,717 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Edwards County. Kinsley is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 56 and U.S. Route 183.

History

Kinsley was founded in 1873 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, John Kinsley. The first post office in Kinsley was established in 1874.
Kinsley was incorporated as a city in 1885. The city was a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and was a major shipping point for cattle and grain.

Geography

Kinsley is located at 37°59'17" North, 99°25'17" West (37.9879, -99.4214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Kinsley's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a flour mill. The city also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 2,717 people, 1,093 households, and 690 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,248.3 people per square mile (867.2/km2). There were 1,223 housing units at an average density of 1,010.8 per square mile (390.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
