Horton Summary
Horton is a city located in Brown County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brown County.
History
Horton was founded in 1857 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the first settler, John Horton. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Horton was a major stop on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. The railroad brought many new settlers to the area, and the town grew rapidly.

Horton is located at 39°45'25" North, 95°25'17" West (39.756944, -95.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Horton is a small rural community with a diverse economy. The city is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The city also has a small industrial park, which is home to several manufacturing companies.
The city is also home to a large agricultural sector. The surrounding area is home to several large farms, which produce corn, soybeans, wheat, and other crops.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 672.2 per square mile (260.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 21.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
