Holyrood Summary

Holyrood, Kansas is a small town located in Ellsworth County, Kansas. It is situated along the Smoky Hill River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Salina. The town was founded in 1871 and was named after the Scottish town of Holyrood. The population of Holyrood was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Holyrood is located at 38°45'25" North, 98°17'45" West (38.756944, -98.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.
The town is located in the Smoky Hills region of Kansas, which is characterized by rolling hills and prairies. The Smoky Hill River runs through the town, providing a source of recreation for the residents.

Economy

The economy of Holyrood is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,179.3 people per square mile (455.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 527.2 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.73% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
