Haviland Summary
Haviland is a small town located in Kiowa County, Kansas, United States. The population was 545 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kiowa County.
Geography
Haviland is located at 37°14'17" North, 99°25'17" West (37.238, -99.421). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
History
Haviland was founded in 1885 by the Santa Fe Railroad. The town was named after the Haviland family, who were early settlers in the area. The first post office was established in 1887.
Haviland was incorporated as a city in 1891. The city was a major shipping point for cattle and wheat. The population peaked at 1,000 in the early 1900s.
Economy
The economy of Haviland is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators and a feed mill. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 225 households, and 145 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.0 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 250 housing units at an average density of 410.0 per square mile (158.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.7% of the population.
There were 225 households, out of which 28.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.1% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.0% were non-families. 32.4% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $37,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 8.3% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
