Goessel Summary

Goessel is a small city located in Marion County, Kansas, United States. It is situated in the heart of the Great Plains, approximately 30 miles north of Wichita. The city has a population of 1,195 as of the 2010 census.

History

Goessel was founded in 1876 by Mennonite immigrants from Russia. The city was named after the Mennonite leader, Elder John Goessel. The first settlers arrived in the area in 1874 and began to build homes and businesses. The first post office was established in 1876 and the first school was built in 1877.
The city was incorporated in 1887 and the first mayor was elected in 1888. The first newspaper, The Goessel News, was established in 1889. The city was a major center for Mennonite culture and religion in the early years.

Geography

Goessel is located at 38°25'17" North, 97°14'17" West (38.4214, -97.2381). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Goessel is a small rural community with a strong agricultural base. The city is home to several businesses, including a grain elevator, a feed mill, a lumber yard, a hardware store, and a grocery store. The city also has a bank, a post office, and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,195 people, 463 households, and 315 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,717.1 people per square mile (662.3/km2).
