Garden City Summary

Garden City is a city located in Finney County, Kansas, United States. It is the county seat of Finney County and the largest city in the county. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 26,658. The city is home to Garden City Community College and the Lee Richardson Zoo, the largest zoological park in western Kansas.

History

Garden City was founded in 1878 by a group of settlers from Garden City, Michigan. The city was named after the Michigan city, which was named after the Garden of Eden in the Bible. The city was incorporated in 1885.
Garden City was a major stop on the Santa Fe Trail, and the city was a major center for cattle drives in the late 19th century. The city was also a major center for the agricultural industry, and the city was home to several large grain elevators.
In the early 20th century, Garden City was a major center for the oil industry. The city was home to several oil refineries and oil-related businesses.

Garden City is located at 37°59'N 100°51'W (37.983, -100.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Garden City is a major center for the agricultural industry. The city is home to several large grain elevators and is a major center for the production of wheat, corn, and other grains. The city is also home to several meatpacking plants, including Tyson Foods, Cargill, and JBS.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 26,658 people, 9,845 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,400.3 people per square mile (926.2/km2). There were 10,845 housing units at an average density of 976.2 per square mile (377.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 1.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 21.2% from other races, and 3.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 43.2% of the population.
There were 9,845 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $38,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 14.2% of families and 17.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 24.2% of those under age 18 and 9.7% of those age 65 or over.
