Elwood Summary

Elwood, Kansas is a small town located in Doniphan County, Kansas. It is situated on the Missouri River, just south of the Nebraska border. The town was founded in 1854 and was named after Elwood, Indiana. The population of Elwood was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Elwood is located at 39°45'45" North, 95°14'45" West (39.7625, -95.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

History

Elwood was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from Indiana. The town was named after Elwood, Indiana. The first post office was established in 1855. The town was incorporated in 1872.
In the late 19th century, Elwood was a thriving river port. The town was home to several businesses, including a flour mill, a sawmill, a brickyard, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a newspaper.
In the early 20th century, Elwood was a popular tourist destination. The town was home to several resorts, including the Elwood Hotel and the Elwood Beach Resort.

Economy

The economy of Elwood is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a hog farm, and a grain farm. The town also has several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 294 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 686.7 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
