Ellis Summary

Ellis, Kansas is a small city located in Ellis County, in the northwest corner of the state. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. The city was founded in 1867 and named after Colonel George Ellis, a Union Army officer who served in the Civil War. The population of Ellis was 2,092 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Ellis is located at 38°55'25" North, 99°25'45" West (38.923861, -99.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.
The city is located in the High Plains region of the Great Plains, and is surrounded by rolling hills and prairies. The Smoky Hill River runs through the city, and there are several small lakes and ponds in the area.

Economy

The economy of Ellis is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing wheat, corn, and other crops. The city also has a small manufacturing sector, with several small businesses producing a variety of products.
