History

The city of Ellinwood was founded in 1885 by the Ellinwood brothers, who were looking to capitalize on the area's rich agricultural resources. The city was named after the brothers, and the first post office was established in 1886. The city was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Ellinwood was a thriving agricultural center, with a variety of businesses and services. The city was home to a flour mill, a creamery, a lumber yard, a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, and a variety of other businesses.
In the 1920s, the city began to experience a decline in population as people moved away to larger cities. The Great Depression of the 1930s further exacerbated the decline, and the city's population dropped to just over 1,000 by 1940.
In the 1950s, the city began to experience a resurgence, as new businesses and industries moved into the area. The city's population grew to over 1,500 by 1960.

Ellinwood is located at 38°17'25" North, 98°45'45" West (38.290278, -98.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

The economy of Ellinwood is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to a variety of farms, including wheat, corn, and soybean farms. The city is also home to a variety of businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, and a variety of other businesses.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,717 people, 690 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,420.3 people per square mile (548.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.17% White, 0.35% African American, 0.35% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.53% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.76% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
