The town is located in the High Plains region of the Great Plains, and is part of the Cimarron River Valley. The Cimarron River flows through the town, and is a major source of water for the area. The town is located in the semi-arid climate zone, and receives an average of 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) of precipitation per year.

The economy of Elkhart is largely based on agriculture and ranching. The town is home to several large farms and ranches, and is a major producer of wheat, corn, and other grains. The town is also home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
