History

The area that is now Concordia was first settled in 1857 by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally named “Germania”, but was later changed to Concordia in 1859. The name was chosen to reflect the spirit of harmony and unity among the settlers.
In 1867, Concordia was officially incorporated as a city. The city quickly grew and by 1880, it had a population of 1,845. During this time, Concordia was a major center for trade and commerce in the region.
In the late 19th century, Concordia was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad. This allowed the city to become a major hub for the transportation of goods and people.

Geography

Concordia is located at 39°35'17" North, 97°14'45" West (39.588, -97.246). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.
The city is located in the Republican River Valley, which is part of the Great Plains region. The Republican River flows through the city and is a major source of water for the area.

Economy

Concordia’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large agricultural companies, including Cargill, Inc., and Tyson Foods.

The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
