Centralia Summary

Centralia, Kansas is a small town located in Nemaha County, in the northeastern corner of the state. It is situated on the banks of the Big Nemaha River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town was founded in 1867, and has a population of approximately 1,000 people.

History

Centralia was founded in 1867 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Centralia Coal Company, which had been established in the area in 1865. The company was responsible for the construction of the first railroad line in the area, which connected Centralia to the nearby town of Seneca.
The town quickly grew, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving community. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a general store, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a school, a post office, and a newspaper.
In the early 1900s, the Centralia Coal Company began to experience financial difficulties, and the town began to decline. The railroad line was abandoned in the 1920s, and the town's population began to decline. By the 1950s, the town had become a virtual ghost town.
