Burlingame Summary

Burlingame, Kansas is a small town located in Osage County, Kansas. It is situated on the banks of the Marais des Cygnes River, approximately 20 miles south of Topeka. The town was founded in 1854 and was named after Anson Burlingame, a prominent lawyer and politician. As of the 2010 census, the population of Burlingame was 1,170.

History

The area that is now Burlingame was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was originally known as “Mud Creek”, but was later renamed after Anson Burlingame, a prominent lawyer and politician. The town was officially incorporated in 1858.
In the late 19th century, Burlingame was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a canning factory. The town also had a number of stores, churches, and a hotel.
