Burden Summary

Burden is a small town located in Cowley County, Kansas, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Walnut River, approximately 10 miles south of Winfield. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

Burden was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Burden Iron Works of Troy, New York, which had supplied the settlers with the iron for their plows. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1887, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a branch line from Winfield to Burden. This allowed the town to become a major shipping point for grain and livestock. The railroad also brought new settlers to the area, and the population of Burden grew rapidly.
In the early 1900s, Burden was a thriving community with several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a newspaper, a lumberyard, and several stores. The town also had a school, a library, and a number of churches.

Geography

Burden is located at 37°7'25" North, 96°45'25" West (37.123611, -96.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Burden is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, and the surrounding area is used for growing wheat, corn, and other crops. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 891.7 people per square mile (344.7/km2). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 9.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.5% were non-families. 27.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.12.
