History
Axtell was founded in 1887 by the Kansas Pacific Railway. The town was named after William Axtell, a railroad official. The first post office in Axtell was established in 1887.
Geography
Axtell is located at 39°45'17" North, 96°25'17" West (39.754722, -96.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Axtell is a small rural community with a population of 545 people. The economy is largely based on agriculture, with the majority of the population employed in farming and related activities. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the city. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 372.3 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.37% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.09% of the population.
