Assaria Summary
Assaria is a small city located in Saline County, Kansas, United States. It is situated along the Smoky Hill River, approximately 8 miles south of Salina. The population was 590 at the 2010 census.
History
Assaria was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Sweden. The town was named after Assar, a Swedish village. The first post office was established in 1872.
In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a branch line from Herington to Salina, passing through Assaria. This branch line was later extended to McPherson and eventually to Wichita.
Geography
Assaria is located at 38°45'17" North, 97°30'45" West (38.754722, -97.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
Economy
The economy of Assaria is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain elevators, as well as a feed mill and a fertilizer plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 590 people, 229 households, and 166 families residing in the city. The population density was 990.2 people per square mile (382.2/km2). There were 248 housing units at an average density of 414.2 per square mile (159.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.45% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.68% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 229 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 25.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.7% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,845. About 4.2% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.3% of those under age 18 and 5.3% of those age 65 or over.
