Andover Summary
Andover, Kansas is a city located in Butler County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 11,791. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area.
History
The area that is now Andover was first settled in 1871 by a group of settlers from Andover, Massachusetts. The town was originally called Andover Center, but the name was changed to Andover in 1873. The city was incorporated in 1887.
Geography
Andover is located at 37°41'17" North, 97°9'17" West (37.688056, -97.154722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Andover is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including Cessna Aircraft Company, which has a large manufacturing facility in the city.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 10,082 people, 3,717 households, and 2,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 899.3 people per square mile (347.3/km2). There were 3,919 housing units at an average density of 348.2 per square mile (134.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.6% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.3% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.3% were non-families. 20.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $56,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
