Oak Creek Summary

Oak Creek, Wisconsin is a city located in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. The city is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 10 miles south of downtown Milwaukee. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 35,451.

History

The area that is now Oak Creek was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Potawatomi, Menominee, and Ho-Chunk. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the early 1800s, and the first permanent settlement was established in 1835. The settlement was originally known as Oak Creek Crossing, and was located at the intersection of two Native American trails.
In 1846, the settlement was renamed Oak Creek and was incorporated as a village in 1892. The village grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and was officially incorporated as a city in 1955.

Geography

Oak Creek is located at 43°7′N 87°54′W (43.1167, -87.9000). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 10.9 square miles (28.2 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km2) is water.

Economy

Oak Creek is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Milwaukee County Research Park, which is located in the city.
The city is also home to several major shopping centers, including Southridge Mall, which is the largest shopping center in the Milwaukee area.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 35,451 people, 14,845 households, and 9,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,241.3 people per square mile (1,250.2/km2). There were 15,845 housing units at an average density of 1,450.2 per square mile (561.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 2.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.7% of the population.
There were 14,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $62,945. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
