New Berlin Summary

New Berlin, Wisconsin is a city located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. It is located approximately 15 miles southwest of Milwaukee. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 39,584, making it the second-largest city in Waukesha County after the city of Waukesha.

History

New Berlin was first settled in 1836 by German immigrants. The city was originally known as "New Berlin Township" and was incorporated as a village in 1938. The city was named after the German city of Berlin, which was the hometown of many of the early settlers.
In the early years, the city was primarily an agricultural community, with many of the residents working on farms. In the 1950s, the city began to experience rapid growth as Milwaukee's suburbs began to expand. By the 1970s, New Berlin had become a bedroom community for Milwaukee, with many of its residents commuting to the city for work.

Geography

New Berlin is located at 43°3'25" North, 88°7'25" West (43.056944, -88.123611). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles, of which 16.1 square miles is land and 0.1 square miles is water.
The city is located in the southeastern part of Waukesha County, and is bordered by the cities of Brookfield, Wauwatosa, and Greenfield. It is also bordered by the towns of Waukesha, Muskego, and Vernon.

Economy

New Berlin is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including Quad/Graphics, a printing and publishing company; Regal Ware, a manufacturer of kitchenware; and Briggs & Stratton, a manufacturer of small engines.
The city is also home to several shopping centers, including the New Berlin Towne Center, which features a variety of stores and restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 39,584 people, 15,845 households, and 11,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,450.2 people per square mile. There were 16,541 housing units at an average density of 1,026.2 per square mile.
The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 2.7% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 15,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $35,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $29,945. About 2.7% of families and 3.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.3% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
