History

Waterloo was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Battle of Waterloo, which had taken place in 1815. The first post office was established in 1837, and the town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Waterloo was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a flour mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a number of stores, a hotel, and a bank.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
