Salamonia Summary

Salamonia is a small town located in Jay County, Indiana, United States. It is situated along the Mississinewa River, approximately 10 miles south of Portland, the county seat. The population was estimated to be 545 in the 2010 census.

Salamonia is located at 40°41'25"N 85°17'45"W (40.690278, -85.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Salamonia was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the nearby Salamonia Creek, which was named after a Native American chief. The town was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Salamonia was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a grist mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
In the early 20th century, the town's economy shifted to manufacturing. The town was home to several factories, including a furniture factory, a canning factory, and a brick factory.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
