Richmond Summary

Richmond, Indiana is a city located in the east-central part of the state, in Wayne County. It is the county seat and the largest city in the county. History

Richmond was founded in 1806 by David Hoover, a Quaker from North Carolina. He purchased the land from the local Native Americans and named the settlement after Richmond, Virginia. The city was incorporated in 1818 and became the county seat of Wayne County in 1873.
In the 19th century, Richmond was a major center for the manufacturing of carriages and wagons. The city was also home to several major industries, including the Richmond Locomotive Works, which produced locomotives for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The city was also home to the Richmond Paper Company, which produced paper products for the region.

Geography

Richmond is located at 39°47'N 84°51'W (39.78, -84.85). The city is situated along the Whitewater River, and is part of the Richmond-Connersville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Richmond’s economy is largely based on manufacturing. The city is home to several major employers, including the Richmond Locomotive Works, the Richmond Paper Company, and the Wayne County Hospital. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 36,812 people, 14,945 households, and 8,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,288.3 people per square mile (883.3/km2). There were 16,837 housing units at an average density of 1,049.2 per square mile (405.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 14,945 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.2% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $32,917, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $31,945 versus $23,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.7% of those age 65 or over.
