Portland, Indiana is a city located in Jay County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Jay County. The population was 6,223 at the 2010 census. The city is the home of the Jay County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Geography
Portland is located at 40°27'25" North, 84°59'45" West (40.456944, -84.995833). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 4.14 square miles (10.71 km2), of which 4.12 square miles (10.66 km2) is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 km2) is water.
Economy
Portland is a small city with a diverse economy. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Jayco, Inc., a recreational vehicle manufacturer, and Portland Products, Inc., a manufacturer of plastic products. The city also has a strong agricultural base, with several farms located in the area.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 6,223 people, 2,541 households, and 1,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,502.2 people per square mile (579.3/km2). There were 2,817 housing units at an average density of 688.2 per square mile (265.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older.
