Pendleton Summary
Pendleton is a town located in Madison County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Anderson, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 4,253 at the 2010 census.
History
Pendleton was founded in 1820 by William Pendleton, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally called Pendletonville, but the name was changed to Pendleton in 1837. The town was incorporated in 1851.
Pendleton was a major stop on the Underground Railroad, with many of the town's residents helping to hide and transport escaped slaves. The town was also home to the first public library in Madison County, which was established in 1872.
Geography
Pendleton is located at 40°3'25"N 85°41'25"W (40.056944, -85.690317). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Pendleton is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and several restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer, a metal fabricator, and a printing company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,253 people, 1,717 households, and 1,097 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,921.4 people per square mile (741.2/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 830.5 per square mile (320.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,717 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
