Otterbein Summary

Otterbein is a small town located in Benton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Otterbein was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Otterbein Church, which was founded in 1773 by Philip William Otterbein and Martin Boehm. The church was a part of the United Brethren in Christ denomination. The town was originally known as Otterbein Station, but the name was changed to Otterbein in 1871.
The town was an important stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 1800s. The canal was used to transport goods and people between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River.
