New Castle Summary
New Castle is a city located in the east central part of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is the county seat of Henry County and is located along the Big Blue River. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 18,114, making it the largest city in Henry County.
History
New Castle was founded in 1823 by William Conner and his family. Conner had previously served in the War of 1812 and was a prominent figure in the early settlement of the area. The city was named after New Castle, Kentucky, the hometown of Conner's wife. The city was incorporated in 1838 and was designated as the county seat of Henry County in 1844.
In the late 19th century, New Castle became a major industrial center, with several large factories producing a variety of products. The city was also home to several large coal mines, which provided employment for many of the city's residents.
Geography
New Castle is located at 39°55′N 85°21′W (39.914, -85.350). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 8.9 square miles (23.1 km2), of which 8.8 square miles (22.8 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
New Castle's economy is largely based on manufacturing and industry. The city is home to several large factories, including a steel mill, a paper mill, and a plastics plant. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 18,114 people, 7,541 households, and 4,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,039.2 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 8,093 housing units at an average density of 914.3 per square mile (353.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 7,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $44,945. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 10.2% of families and 13.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 19.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
