New Carlisle was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Carlisle, Pennsylvania. The town was originally known as Carlisle, but the name was changed to New Carlisle in 1839 to avoid confusion with the existing town of Carlisle, Indiana.

New Carlisle is located at 41°44'17" North, 86°20'45" West (41.738, -86.346). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,845 people, 1,945 households, and 1,310 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,200.2 people per square mile (848.7/km2). There were 2,093 housing units at an average density of 945.2 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 2.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,945 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
