Laurel Summary

Laurel is a small town located in Franklin County, Indiana, United States. It is situated in the southeastern part of the state, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis. The population of Laurel was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Laurel was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Laurel Grove” and was named after the laurel trees that grew in the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Laurel was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The town also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.
In the early 20th century, Laurel began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities in search of better job opportunities. The town’s population dropped from 1,845 in 1910 to 1,619 in 1930.

Geography

Laurel is located in southeastern Indiana, about 25 miles south of Indianapolis. The town is situated in Franklin County, which is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area.
The town is located on the banks of the Whitewater River, which flows through the town. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland.
