Kendallville Summary
Kendallville is a city located in Noble County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Noble County. The population was 8,932 at the 2010 census. Kendallville is located in the northeastern part of Indiana, approximately 40 miles (64 km) south of South Bend and 50 miles (80 km) north of Fort Wayne.
History
Kendallville was founded in 1837 by William Coquillard, a fur trader of French-Canadian descent. The city was named after Amos Kendall, a postmaster general under President Andrew Jackson. The city was incorporated in 1859.
Kendallville was a major center of the Underground Railroad in the mid-19th century. It was also the site of the first public school in Noble County, established in 1844.
Geography
Kendallville is located at 41°25'25" North, 85°25'17" West (41.423, -85.421). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), all land.

Kendallville is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,932 people, 3,717 households, and 2,323 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,711.2 people per square mile (661.2/km2). There were 4,068 housing units at an average density of 776.2 per square mile (300.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 3,717 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,917. Males had a median income of $35,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,917. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
