History

Garrett was founded in 1851 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after John W. Garrett, a prominent railroad executive. Garrett was incorporated as a town in 1867 and as a city in 1891.
Garrett was a major stop on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, and the city was a hub of activity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The city was home to several factories, including a foundry, a furniture factory, a flour mill, and a cigar factory.

The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.96.
