Elwood Summary
Elwood, Indiana is a city located in Madison County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Anderson, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,614 at the 2010 census.
History
Elwood was founded in 1853 by William Elwood, a Quaker from North Carolina. The city was named after him. Elwood was incorporated as a town in 1873 and as a city in 1891.
The city was a major industrial center in the early 20th century, with several large factories producing steel, glass, and other products. The city was also home to the Elwood Haynes Automobile Company, which produced the first successful American automobile in 1894.
Geography
Elwood is located at 40°19'25"N 85°48'45"W (40.323607, -85.812500). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.
Economy
Elwood is a major industrial center in the region. The city is home to several large factories, including a steel mill, a glass factory, and a paper mill. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 8,614 people, 3,541 households, and 2,310 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.2 people per square mile (642.3/km2). There were 3,919 housing units at an average density of 754.3 per square mile (291.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
