Elwood Summary

Elwood, Indiana is a city located in Madison County, Indiana, United States. It is part of the Anderson, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 8,614 at the 2010 census.

History

Elwood was founded in 1853 by William Elwood, a Quaker from North Carolina. The city was named after him. Elwood was incorporated as a town in 1873 and as a city in 1891.
The city was a major industrial center in the early 20th century, with several large factories producing steel, glass, and other products. The city was also home to the Elwood Haynes Automobile Company, which produced the first successful American automobile in 1894.

Geography

Elwood is located at 40°19'25"N 85°48'45"W (40.323607, -85.812500). According to the 2010 census, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Elwood is a major industrial center in the region. The city is home to several large factories, including a steel mill, a glass factory, and a paper mill. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
