Geography
Dunkirk is located at 40°37′N 85°17′W (40.619, -85.286). According to the 2010 census, Dunkirk has a total area of 1.7 square miles (4.4 km2), all land.
History
Dunkirk was founded in 1837 by William and Mary Dunkirk, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was named after the Dunkirks, who were originally from Dunkirk, New York. The town was incorporated in 1867.
The town was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the early 1800s. The canal was used to transport goods and people between Fort Wayne and Toledo, Ohio. The canal was abandoned in the late 1800s, but the town still has a few remnants of the canal, including a lock and a few bridges.

The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.04.
