Darlington Summary

Darlington is a small town located in Montgomery County, Indiana, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Wabash River, approximately 25 miles northwest of Crawfordsville. The population of Darlington was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Darlington was first settled in 1824 by a group of settlers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “New Hope” and was later renamed “Darlington” in 1837 after the town of Darlington, England. The town was officially incorporated in 1851.
In the late 19th century, Darlington was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a flour mill, a woolen mill, and a brickyard. The town also had a railroad station, which connected it to the larger cities of Indianapolis and Chicago.

Geography

Darlington is located at 40°25'25" North, 86°51'45" West (40.423, -86.862). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Darlington is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several grain mills, a sawmill, a flour mill, a woolen mill, and a brickyard. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.4 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
