Covington Summary

Covington is a small town located in Fountain County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Fountain County. Covington is located in the Wabash Valley region of Indiana, and is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area.

History

Covington was founded in 1826 by William Covington, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as Covington Station, and was the first county seat of Fountain County. The town was officially incorporated in 1837.
Covington was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was completed in 1853. The canal brought economic growth to the town, and it became a center for trade and commerce. The canal was eventually abandoned in the late 19th century, and the town's economy shifted to agriculture.
