Columbia City Summary

Columbia City is a city located in Whitley County, Indiana, United States. It is the county seat of Whitley County. The population was 8,750 at the 2010 census. The city is the principal city of the Columbia City, Indiana Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is included in the Fort Wayne-Huntington-Auburn, Indiana Combined Statistical Area.

History

Columbia City was founded in 1838 by William B. Hayden, who named it after Christopher Columbus. The town was platted in 1839 and incorporated in 1867. The first post office was established in 1839.

Geography

Columbia City is located at 41°10'25" North, 85°27'17" West (41.173611, -85.454722). According to the 2010 census, Columbia City has a total area of 5.9 square miles (15.3 km2), of which 5.8 square miles (15.1 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

The economy of Columbia City is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several manufacturing companies, including Columbia City Plastics, Columbia City Tool & Die, and Columbia City Machine Works. The city also has a strong agricultural presence, with several farms located in the area.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,750 people, 3,541 households, and 2,310 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,500.3 people per square mile (579.2/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 662.3 per square mile (255.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.01.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,845, and the median income for a family was $50,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females.
