History
Cayuga was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after the Cayuga tribe of the Iroquois Nation. The first post office was established in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1867.
Cayuga was a major stop on the Wabash and Erie Canal, which was built in the 1840s. The canal was used to transport goods and people between the Great Lakes and the Ohio River. The canal was abandoned in the late 19th century, but its legacy can still be seen in the town today.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
