Cambridge City Summary
Cambridge City is a small town located in Wayne County, Indiana, United States. It is situated along the Whitewater River, approximately 40 miles east of Indianapolis. The population was 1,885 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Cambridge City was first settled in 1814 by a group of Quakers from North Carolina. The town was originally known as “Newburg”, but was later renamed “Cambridge” in 1836 after the city of Cambridge, England. The town was officially incorporated in 1844.
In the late 19th century, Cambridge City was a major stop on the Whitewater Valley Railroad, which connected Cincinnati, Ohio to Indianapolis. The railroad brought a great deal of economic growth to the area, and the town quickly became a center for industry and commerce.
Geography
Cambridge City is located at 39°45′N 85°10′W (39.75, -85.17). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.2 km2), all land.
Economy
The economy of Cambridge City is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a feed mill, a furniture store, and a hardware store. The town is also home to a number of light industrial businesses, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication shop.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 1,885 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,569.2 people per square mile (605.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.3 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.6% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $37,917, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,964 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
