Bloomingdale is a small town located in Parke County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Bloomingdale was founded in 1837 by William and Mary Ann (Hendricks) Smith. The town was named after the Smiths' hometown of Bloomingdale, Ohio. The first post office was established in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Bloomingdale is located at 39°45'25" North, 87°17'45" West (39.756944, -87.295833). According to the 2010 census, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

The economy of Bloomingdale is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,817.2 people per square mile (701.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 776.2 per square mile (299.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.90% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 0.73% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.03.
