Stevenson Summary

Stevenson is a city located in Jackson County, Alabama, United States. It is situated along the Tennessee River and is the county seat of Jackson County. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Stevenson was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from North Carolina and Virginia. The town was originally known as "Crow's Landing" and was later renamed "Stevenson" in honor of the first postmaster, William Stevenson. The town was incorporated in 1887.
During the Civil War, Stevenson was a major supply depot for the Confederate Army. The town was also the site of a major battle in 1863, when Union forces under General William T. Sherman attempted to capture the town. The Union forces were unsuccessful and the town remained in Confederate hands.
In the late 19th century, Stevenson became a major railroad hub, with the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway running through the town. The railroad brought economic prosperity to the area and helped to spur the growth of the town.
