Saraland Summary
Saraland is a city located in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. It is part of the Mobile metropolitan statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Saraland was 13,405.
History
Saraland was founded in 1887 by the Saraland Land Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Mobile, Alabama, who purchased a large tract of land in the area. The town was named after the Saraland Land Company. The town was incorporated in 1915.
Geography
Saraland is located at 30°51'25" North, 88°04'45" West (30.856944, -88.079167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.2 square miles (29.0 km2), of which 11.1 square miles (28.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.
Economy
Saraland is home to several major employers, including the Saraland Industrial Park, which is home to several manufacturing and distribution companies. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,945 people, 4,717 households, and 3,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,072.2 people per square mile (414.7/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 441.3 per square mile (170.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.7% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. 2.2% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $48,945. Males had a median income of $36,945 versus $25,945 for females.
