Gurley Summary

Gurley is a small town located in Madison County, Alabama. It is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area. The town has a population of 1,845 as of the 2010 census.

History

Gurley was founded in 1827 by William Gurley, a settler from North Carolina. The town was originally known as Gurley's Crossroads, and was located at the intersection of two major roads. The town was incorporated in 1891 and was named after its founder.
Gurley was a small farming community until the 1950s, when the town began to experience rapid growth due to the influx of new residents from the nearby cities of Huntsville and Decatur. The town's population grew from 1,000 in 1950 to over 2,000 by the 1970s.

Geography

Gurley is located in northern Madison County, Alabama, at 34°45'25" North, 86°37'45" West (34.7569, -86.6294). The town is situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and is part of the Huntsville-Decatur Combined Statistical Area.
The town has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land. The town is located near the Flint River, which flows through the area.
