Cherokee Summary

Cherokee is a small town located in the northeastern corner of Alabama, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It is situated in the Cherokee County, which is part of the larger Etowah County. The town is located on the banks of the Coosa River, and is home to a population of approximately 1,500 people.

History

The area that is now Cherokee was first settled by the Cherokee Indians in the early 1800s. The town was originally known as "Cherokee Crossing" and was a trading post for the Cherokee people. The town was officially incorporated in 1836, and the name was changed to "Cherokee" in 1837.
The town was a major stop on the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad, which was built in the late 1800s. This allowed the town to become a major hub for the cotton industry, and it quickly grew in size and population.
In the early 1900s, the town was home to a large number of African-American residents, who were employed in the cotton industry. The town was also home to a large number of Italian immigrants, who were employed in the coal mines.
