Whitehall Summary

Whitehall is a village located in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the La Crosse-Onalaska, WI-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Whitehall was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after Whitehall, New York, the hometown of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1857. The village was incorporated in 1872.

Geography

Whitehall is located at 44°25'25" North, 91°25'25" West (44.423, -91.423). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Whitehall is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and a variety of restaurants. The village also has a small industrial park.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 790 housing units at an average density of 654.2 per square mile (253.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.11% African American, 0.05% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.20% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.2% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
