Wauzeka Summary

Wauzeka is a small village located in Crawford County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Kickapoo River, near the Wisconsin-Iowa border. The population was 545 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Wauzeka was first settled in the early 1840s by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Wauzeka Station" and was a stop on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. The name Wauzeka is derived from the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) word for "prairie chicken".
In 1854, the village was officially incorporated as the Village of Wauzeka. The village was a popular stop for travelers and settlers heading west. In the late 19th century, the village was home to a number of businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a sawmill.

Geography

Wauzeka is located at 43°17'25" North, 90°51'45" West (43.290278, -90.862472). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Wauzeka is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several dairy farms, as well as a number of other farms that produce corn, soybeans, and other crops. The village also has a number of small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 545 people, 213 households, and 145 families residing in the village. The population density was 778.6 people per square mile (301.3/km2). There were 229 housing units at an average density of 327.1 per square mile (126.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.4% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.1% of the population.
There were 213 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.5% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $37,500, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,845. About 5.3% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
