Waupun Summary
Waupun is a city located in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. It is situated on the Rock River, about 30 miles southwest of Fond du Lac and 40 miles northeast of Madison. The population was 11,340 at the 2010 census.
History
The area that is now Waupun was first settled in 1839 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The city was named after the Ho-Chunk (Winnebago) word for "dawn of day" or "dawn of the new day". The city was officially incorporated in 1844.
In the late 19th century, Waupun was a major center for the production of cheese and butter. The city was also home to several large manufacturing companies, including the Waupun Foundry and Machine Company, which produced agricultural implements, and the Waupun Carriage Company, which produced carriages and wagons.
Geography
Waupun is located at 43°37'N 88°45'W (43.619, -88.749). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Waupun's economy is largely based on manufacturing and agriculture. The city is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Waupun Foundry and Machine Company, which produces agricultural implements, and Waupun Carriage Company, which produces carriages and wagons. The city is also home to several dairy farms, which produce cheese and butter.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,340 people, 4,541 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,400.7 people per square mile (541.3/km2). There were 4,845 housing units at an average density of 597.3 per square mile (230.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.98.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
