Waunakee Summary

Waunakee is a village located in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 12,092 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Madison Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

The area that is now Waunakee was first settled in 1848 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Westport, but was renamed Waunakee in 1856. The name is derived from the Ho-Chunk word for "beautiful place". The village was officially incorporated in 1892.

Geography

Waunakee is located at 43°11'25" North, 89°25'45" West (43.1903, -89.4261). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Waunakee is home to a variety of businesses, including manufacturing, retail, and service industries. The village is also home to several large employers, including Waunakee Community School District, Waunakee Utilities, and Waunakee Village Hall.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 10,845 people, 3,845 households, and 3,072 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,093.2 people per square mile (808.3/km2). There were 3,945 housing units at an average density of 758.2 per square mile (293.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.45% White, 0.37% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 3,845 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.2% were married couples living together, 6.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.81 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 30.9% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $68,945, and the median income for a family was $76,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $32,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $27,945. About 1.2% of families and 1.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.7% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
