Washburn is a city located in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Bayfield County. The city is located on the shore of Lake Superior, and is part of the Duluth, Minnesota-Superior, Wisconsin metropolitan area.

History

The area that is now Washburn was first settled in 1854 by a group of lumberjacks from Maine. The town was named after Cadwallader C. Washburn, a prominent lumberman and politician from Wisconsin. The town was incorporated in 1874.
In the late 19th century, Washburn was a major lumber port, with ships carrying lumber from the area to ports around the Great Lakes. The lumber industry declined in the early 20th century, and the city shifted its focus to tourism.

Washburn's economy is largely based on tourism. The city is home to several resorts and hotels, as well as a variety of restaurants and shops. The city also has a marina, which provides access to Lake Superior.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 817 households, and 463 families residing in the city. The population density was 454.3 people per square mile (175.3/km2). There were 917 housing units at an average density of 224.3 per square mile (86.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 817 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42.3% were non-families. 36.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.17 and the average family size was 2.81.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $22,500 for females. The per capita income for the city was $19,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
